More about For the Love of Language
This is an integrated systems-based approach to Montessori grammar that harnesses upper elementary students’ emerging abstract reasoning, allowing them to discover powerful grammatical constructs. Logic and predictable patterns make symbolizing and analyzing especially fun and accurate. Lessons weave parts of speech and sentence analysis together to develop not only skilled grammarians, but accomplished readers and writers. Note: earlier versions of many of the grammar lessons were included in the previously published grammar-only album, Not Your Grandma’s Grammar.
In addition to traditional Montessori grammar lessons, reading and writing activities combine formal lessons with creative, short, day-starter activities that will keep all eight strands of Scarborough’s Rope active in a busy upper elementary classroom. Together, these engaging lessons and activities provide a holistic approach to literacy education.
More about Scarborough’s Reading Rope:
Hollis Scarborough is a leading researcher in the field of reading acquisition. Her model, Scarborough’s Reading Rope illustrates eight components necessary for skilled reading. Three of these relate to word recognition skills: phonological awareness, decoding, and sight recognition of familiar words. The remaining five relate to language comprehension skills: background knowledge, vocabulary, language structures (grammar and structured writing), verbal reasoning, and knowledge of the genres of literature. Dr. Scarborough’s research shows that all eight components are necessary fot what Dr. Montessori called “total reading”
