At any age, Normalization is characterized by love of work, concentration, self-discipline, and sociability (feelings of empathy for others and for the group). Most of Dr. Montessori’s writings describe normalization in children under the age of 6. But Normalization looks quite different in the elementary classroom. When we understand how Normalization manifests in second-place children, we stop trying to squeeze the second-plane child into first-plane expectations! We give the child the space and grace to follow their developmental urges and demands.
